PSHE at St Augustine’s Catholic Primary School

 

Vision:

At St Augustine’s, we believe that nurturing happy and healthy children is central to all aspects of their learning and development. We strive to ensure our children acquire the required skills and confidence to make informed, healthy and moral choices in their lives and recognise that they play a positive role in the school and their wider community.

We endeavour that our PSHE (Personal, social, health and economic) curriculum will help enable our children to become confident, independent members of society with an awareness of their rights and responsibilities as individuals and as part of a diverse society.

We aim to create a happy, purposeful and supportive environment where children are enabled to become successful learners, develop their full potential and achieve the highest educational standards they can.  Our vision statement reflects a passionate commitment to learning and recognition of the uniqueness of individual learners.  It is driven by our desire to offer the best possible education for our pupils in partnership with parents, the Church and the local community.

Intent:

At St Augustine’s, we use the ‘Ten:Ten ‘Life to the Full Plus’ and the ‘My Happy Mind’ programmes to support us in delivering PSHE.

The TenTen programme (Life to the Full Plus) adopts a spiral curriculum approach so that as a child goes through the programme year-after-year, the learning will develop and grow, with each stage building on the last. myHappymind is a whole school program grounded in science and dedicated to building positive mental wellbeing, that helps children understand how their brains work and creates a culture that helps to build children’s resilience, confidence, and self-esteem. myHappymind also teaches the children how to self-regulate and manage their emotions in stressful times, allowing them to be their very best selves!

 

myHappymind Modules:

Meet your Brain: Understanding how your brain works and how to ensure we look after it so that we can manage our emotions and be at our best. Growth mindset is a key part of this too.

Celebrate: Understanding your unique character strengths and learning to celebrate them. This is a fantastic module for building self-esteem.

Appreciate: Understanding why gratitude matters and how you can develop gratitude as a habit. Gratitude is key to well-being and resilience and we’re all about making it a habit!

Relate: Understanding why positive relationships matter and how to build them. We’re focussed on the building blocks of good relationships and friendships.

Engage: Understanding how to set meaningful goals that matter and how to keep resilient in times of challenge. This module is all about building self-esteem and resilience too.

Implementation:

Through a structured curriculum, interactive lessons, and engaging activities, students learn practical strategies to navigate challenges effectively, foster strong relationships, and cultivate a growth mindset. The program integrates mindfulness techniques, emotional literacy exercises, and social-emotional learning principles to promote holistic well-being.

Impact:

By the end of their academic journey at St Augustine’s, our children will demonstrate confidence and awareness about their wellbeing and will be prepared for the challenges, opportunities, and responsibilities of adult life. The PSHE curriculum will have a positive impact on learners’ health and wellbeing and their ability to achieve, and this will play a crucial part in meeting these obligations.
